Weatherman predicts more snow on Jan 14, 15
Srinagar, Jan 11: The upper reaches of Valley received moderate snowfall while the plains experienced light snowfall on Tuesday even as weatherman has predicted moderate to heavy snowfall onJanuary 14 and 15. The fresh snowfall led to rise in minimum temperature by some degrees across the region.
Srinagar and its adjoining areas experienced light snowfall for about half an hour this morning following improvement in the minimum temperature because of cloudy weather during the night.
An official of Weather department said 0.6 mm snowfall equivalent to rain was recorded in Srinagar till 0800 hrs.
Ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded light to moderate snowfall early this morning.
However, in the upper reaches, including Affarwat and Khilanmarg moderate snowfall was recorded.
Health resort of Pahalgam, in south Kashmir recorded about 1.8 mm snowfall equivalent to rain this morning. However, in the upper reaches including Amarnath cave and its periphery, about one feet of fresh snowfall was experienced since last night.
Reports of snowfall were also recorded at Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Pisso top and Panjterni on traditional cave route.
The weather official said Western Disturbance originating in Arabia sea are approaching the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan. “There would be moderate to very heavy snowfall on January 14 and 15,” he said.
Natural Disaster Management Cell Coordinator Aamir Ali said except Qazigund town in south Kashmir, snowfall was recorded everywhere in the Valley and it lasted for a couple of hours.
“The moderate to heavy snowfall is predicted on January 13 and 14,” he said.
The weather official said due to cloudy weather during the night, the minimum temperature has improved by about two degrees. “Srinagar recorded minimum temperature of 0.0 degree as against yesterday’s - 2.2 degrees Celsius,” he said.
He said Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded an increase of four degrees in the minimum temperature and the mercury settled at zero degrees Celsius.
“The Ladakh region continues to reel under an intense cold wave even as the minimum temperature in Leh town increased by five degrees and settled at - 15.2 degrees Celsius. The Kargil town in Ladakh region recorded minimum temperature of - 16.0 degrees Celsius,” the official said.
He said Gulmarg skiing resort in north Kashmir was the coldest place in Kashmir Valley recording a low of - 8.7 degrees celsius. “The famous hill resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded minimum temperature of - 5.6 degrees celsius. The night temperature at Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, was 3.6 degrees celsius and the minimum temperature recorded in Kokernag town in south Kashmir was - 3.9 degrees Celsius,” he said.
