A bottle of Coca-Cola is shown stripping OIL from a dirty car bumper in this viral video, which is making a comeback across social media.
The now classic video is doing the rounds again, despite being more than two years and pulling in more than 3.7million hits on YouTube.
In the clip a man uses the soft drink to strip the oil from his vehicle
Although initially alarming, most watchers realise this is a simple scientific experiment in action.
Here comes the science bit:
When a metal alloy becomes tarnished, there has been a chemical reaction between the oxygen in the air and one of the metals in the alloy.
Oxygen atoms combine with metal atoms to form what’s called an oxide.
This oxide is what makes the metal appear tarnished.
Acids, like the weak acid present in your can of Coke, can react with the oxide to effectively reverse the process of tarnishing.
The acid dissolves the metal oxides, leaving only shiny metal behind.
You could even try it at home.
Leave a tarnished old penny in a glass of cola overnight.
In the morning it will be shiny and fresh.
