An American Muslim woman on Monday won a law suit against a clothing store which had denied her a job for being wearing a head scarf back in 2008.
The United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of Samantha Elauf, who sued after being denied sales job at an Abercrombie & Fitch Co clothing store in Oklahoma.
The apex court on a 8-1 vote handed a victory to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), a federal agency that had sued the company on behalf of Elauf in 2008, who was denied job at an Abercrombie Kids store in Tulsa when she was 17, World Bulletin reported.
The court, in an opinion by Justice Antonin Scalia, ruled that Elauf needed only to show that her need for an accommodation was a motivating factor in the employer's decision.
At the time of seeking job at the cloth store, Elauf was wearing a head scarf, or hijab.
Muslim groups said in a friend-of-the-court brief in support of Elauf that employment discrimination against Muslims is widespread in the United States.
