These are called the Haʻikū Stairs, also known as the (Stairway to Heaven), and it’s said to be one of the most incredible views in the entire world.

Good things never come easy, and this view certainly doesn’t. Well, it’s illegal to climb for a start. The stairway was originally installed during World War II so military could access a radio station antennae that sat roughly 2,000 feet up in the mountains.

Located on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu, this staircase reaches a peak of nearly 3,000 feet. It is forbidden by the local government due to liability issues and land access problems. Sometimes they even have a guard on site to keep those beauty seekers out.
Where there is a will there is a way, and many thrill seekers have ignored the restrictions. Some patches of the hike are terrifying, but most say the scariest moment comes early, when you’re forced to climb a ladder that goes vertically up the face of the  mountain (don’t look down). Sadly, a recent powerful storm damaged most of the stairs making it now almost completely inaccessible in some spots…. the entire fate of the stairs and the journey they offer is now up in the air unless community organizations come together to fix it.
