Srinagar, Apr 16: Having found a leather bag with valuables including three smart phones, over Rs 9000 cash, credit cards and other valuables could have tempted any youth in 20s who ekes out a living through meager means. But for this duo living on the banks of Manasbal lake, it was time not only to return the bag but even to chase its owner till they finally handed over the belongings.
For this senior journalist heading towards Bandipora in north Kashmir, having lost this bag somewhere en route in Manasbal, things could have been worrisome. But probity of Mubarak Ahmed Dar and Omar Kuchay proved a blessing.
The journalist had taken a halt near the famed Manasbal lake to have a look of the spring bloom along the picturesque resort. But before a stroll in the park, he procured some snacks from nearby “Omar Restaurant”, a smalltime shop selling refreshments. In doing so, he forgot the bag and went ahead.
Mubarak, sitting by Omar who runs the shop, happened to notice vehicle’s “catchy number”. Suddenly the bag left behind grabbed their attention and they opened it to find it loaded.
Mubarak went through the I-Card details and got alert. “Anyone losing I-Card in a place like Kashmir can end up in trouble. Here problem could worsen as the one who lost the I-Card had even lost his phones... Now we started waiting to get any phone call on these numbers so that any of the contacts could be informed,” the duo said.
By now the journalist started looking for his bag here and there, but couldn’t find it anywhere. In doing so, his vehicle drove past Omar Restaurant where Mubarak recognized the white sedan with “catchy number”. But this time the car drove down straight.
“I think it was their bag, we must hand it over to them,” Mubarak told Omar who enquired “But how? “ “They must be worried. Let’s chase them on my bike,” Mubarak responded. The duo instantly jumped on two-wheeler and Mubarak sped it to its fullest.
After a mile long chase, the journalist had a surprise in store when the biking youth beckoned him for halt. On spotting the brown bag they were carrying, he couldn’t believe his eyes.
The youth handed over the bag. But how long would you chase the car? “I don’t know the distance but I had decided to handover the bag its owner at any cost because otherwise he could be in trouble, you never know!”
