Srinagar, Jan 02: Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Sunday admitted that the mass uprising in the past three years lacked direction while JKLF chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik called on valley’s intellectual class to work for people.
The senior separatist leaders were speaking at a seminar “Role of intellectuals in freedom struggle” organized by Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front on the anniversary of Abdul Ahad Wani.
Speaking on the occasion, senior Hurriyat (M) leader, Prof Abdul Gani Bhat said Wani, Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone were killed by “our own people”. Another senior party leader, Bilal Gani Lone said Kashmiris don’t have their own political stand and are “political slaves”.
In his address, Mirwaiz said, “Ups and down come in every struggle, but the need is to introspect why we were not able to give right direction to three successive years of uprising in Kashmir. We should introspect on our weak points and should strategize our policies accordingly so that we can achieve our goal.”
He called for a collective approach on part of every section of the society including the separatist leadership for “capitalizing on the sacrifices given by people of Kashmir”.
Mirwaiz stressed on the need for a proper policy to “compartmentalize the struggle in which ever section of the society will have to play its part”.
The Hurriyat (M) chairman urged intellectual class to come up with suggestions so that the separatist leadership can devise a collective policy for resolution of Kashmir issue as per the aspirations of people.
“We have to move forward with a collective approach. Don’t expect a leader to do everything. Every section of the society has to play its role,” he said.
Mirwaiz said the freedom movement in Kashmir is being portrayed as a regional clash or a struggle pursued only by a section of people.
“A discourse is being run to project the freedom struggle in Kashmir as a Jammu versus Kashmir clash. It also tries to mislead people into believing that our movement is not supported by Shia community, Gujjars or Paharis. To counter such a discourse we have to move forward with a collective approach,” he said.
The Hurriyat (M) chairman said while carrying the “freedom struggle” forward, the society should not suffer.
“We have to think that while working for freedom struggle, the society should not suffer so much that the freedom will be of no use then,” he added.
Meanwhile, the JKLF chairman called on the intellectuals to work for masses. “There is no room for impartiality when you are an intellectual or a writer. You can either represent the state or the people,” Malik said.
He said the intellectual class has to put forward aspirations of people before the state.
“It is the job of an intellectual to give direction to a mob, which sometimes becomes more powerful than the state, so that desired results will be achieved. Otherwise there are chances that the nation will perish,” Malik said.
Commenting on the role of intellectuals, he said, “People who go against the current are the ones who bring a change in the society. Similar should be the case with the intellectuals.”
The JKLF chief said conflict is bigger than people and the state.
“Towering leaders like Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, Jawahar Lal Nehru, many Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan and both these states failed to resolve Kashmir issue and thus were smaller before the conflict. We have no relevance as well,” he said.
Malik said the role of intellectuals is to present the real picture of Kashmir issue at different forums. “We have to work with the international community as well as Indian people to appraise and inform them about the reality of Kashmir issue,” he said.
“This is what we did last year. It has frustrated the extremist elements in India who are not allowing Kashmiri leaders to travel beyond Jammu,” he said.
Paying rich tributes to Abdul Ahad Wani, Malik said he was the person who resolved the constitution of All Parties Hurriyat Conference.
“Wani introduced independence clause in the unconditional right to self-determination. This was the reason for which he was killed,” he said.
“Wani was encyclopedia of international constitution. A US diplomat had once termed him as more intelligent than Bill Clinton,” Malik said.
He said the “freedom sentiment” of Kashmir has intensified over the years “despite use of force to crush it”.
Meanwhile, raising questions on the killing of Wani, Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone, Prof Bhat said they were killed by “our own people”.
“Who killed them? They were not killed Indian army or Jammu and Kashmir police but by our own people who killed many other intellectuals of the valley also,” Bhat said.
He said the time has come for speaking the “truth”. “The intellectual class should not shy away from speaking the truth,” he added.
Bhat said that despite calling for boycott of the dialogue, some people met Indian parliamentarians.
“When we held dialogue, we were termed as Kafirs, but when they met the Indian parliamentarians, they are angels. There is contradiction in our own thought. This dichotomy in the Kashmiri leadership will not work,” he said.
Stressing on the need for holding dialogue to resolve Kashmir issue, Bhat said, “We cannot garner support for the armed struggle, so there is a necessity of sitting on a negotiating table.”
He said that during the recent frequent shutdowns in the valley traders came to him. “We told them our party will issue a statement so that they can open their shops but they were so sacred to open them.” he said.
He said India and Pakistan along with Kashmiri leadership should resolve Kashmir issue by way of dialogue to safeguard themselves from the political motives of America and China.
Speaking on the occasion, Bilal Lone said Kashmiris don’t have their own political stand and are “political slaves”.
“From the past 25 years we are not clear about our political stand, we are political slaves. All we have to do is to create our own political ideology minus phone dictations and agency role so as to work for the Kashmir cause as Kashmiris only,” Lone said.
He said the political leadership should unite all sections of the society. “The role of the intellectuals is to support them in this cause,” he added.
Noted lawyer, Zafar Shah presided over the seminar. He urged the leadership to “protect” the intellectuals of Kashmir. “They should also choose the intellectuals who think that Kashmir is a dispute and are ready to work for it,” he said.
Among others who spoke on the occasion included vice chairman of JKLF, Bashir Ahmad Bhat, vice chairman of Democratic Freedom Party, Moulana Abdullah Tari, senior Hurriyat (M) leader, Moulana Abbas Ansari and Jamait-e-Islami President, Moulana Showkat Shah.
Besides, Rehman Rahi, Zareef Ahmad Zareef, Dr Zafar Mehdi, Dr Javaid Iqbal, Maulana Kant, Dr Altaf Ahmad, Nazir Ahmad Ronga, Dr Ghulam Qadir Allaqaband and Dr Sheikh Mohammad Iqbal also spoke on the occasion.
